学校の英語教育がコミュニケーション重視に変わってきているものの、
依然として日本人は英語に手こずっていると言われております。
しかし、決して学習態度や姿勢に問題がある訳では無く、
むしろ、多くの日本人学生が通うような海外の英語学校によれば、
入学時のクラス分けテストで「日本人はReadingではかなりの点数を取るし、勤勉でやる気もある」
との評価を受けております。
しかし同時に、「上位クラスに入るための必要なSpeaking力が足りない」
との評価も受けています。
そんな日本人にとって、一種の朗報ともいうべきグロービッシュですが、
弊社の派遣講師の大多数が「グロービッシュ」を否定しており、
ほとんどのネイティブにとっては、受け入れ難いものであるようです。
また、仮にノンネイティブ同士の間でグロービッシュが通じても、
肝心のネイティブとの会話においては、彼らに一定の違和感をもたらすばかりか、
最悪の場合、正確に通じないというケースも指摘されています。
例えば、ある国際的な企業で、色々な国籍の社員同士が会議をした際、
ノンネイティブ同士で理解し、無事閉会になった後で、
ネイティブ社員が後からこっそりノンネイティブの社員に、
合意内容を確認していたという事例があるそうです。
そもそも、ノンネイティブによるグロービッシュ賛美の裏には、
「楽して英語をモノにしたい」という願望があるように思われます。
我々、日本人は世界に認められた勤勉さという美徳を捨ててまで、
ブロークンイングリッシュという不完全な英語である
グロービッシュにすがるべきでしょうか？
何事も本物に勝るものはありません。
従来どおり、偽の英語ではなく、
本物の英語を目標として勉強すべきではないでしょうか？
現役時代、打率・打点・本塁打の３冠をほしいままにしたプロ野球の落合監督が、
「ホームランの打ちそこないがヒットである」と言っていました。
つまり、もともとホームランを狙った結果がヒットであって、
最初からヒットを狙っていたのでは３冠王は絶対に取れないと断言しておりました。
目標と結果との関連性は、プロ野球も英語の勉強も共通しているはずでしょうから、
故に、最初からグロービッシュを狙っているようでは、
絶対に本当の英語は身に付かないと言えるのではないでしょうか？
英語教授法の専門家、例えば、日向清人氏の考え方にもあるとおり、
日本人が得意な従来の詰め込み型の英語学習法はそんなには間違っていなくて、
ガリガリと3,000時間ぐらい頑張れば、何とか英語を使えるようになるはず・・・
という見解があります。
（もっとも、ただ時間をかければいいのではなく、効果的に勉強しなければなりませんが・・・・）
グロービッシュが注目させる理由が、単に英語の学習労力の省力化だけにあるならば、
本来勤勉をもって成り立ってきた日本という国に住む国民としては、
全ての英語使用者がグロービッシュで話しかけてくるという想定や期待が出来ない以上、
真面目に本来の英語に取り組むべきであり、
１５００語に限定された語彙と限られた構文だけの勉強で済むという魅力だけで、
本当のネイティブとのコミュニケーションに支障の恐れがあるブロークン英語を
最初から学ぶことを目的とすべきではありません。
最初の（志こころざし）は高くしておいた方が、何事も上手く場合が多いことは周知の通りで、
東大を狙った結果の早慶、早慶を狙った結果のMARCHであれば、
日本人はグロービッシュの誘惑には乗らず、本命の正規の英語だけを追いかけて、
追いかけ損ねた結果としてのグロービッシュということでよろしいのではないでしょうか？

私たち日本人が外国へ訪れると、街の中で不思議で不適切な日本語に出会うことがありませんか？
同じように、外国人(この場合、英語のネイティブスピーカー等)が、
日本の街中で不思議で不適切な英語表現を見ることもあるのではないでしょうか？
今回は、ヨドバシカメラ秋葉原店のレストランフロアにある焼肉屋「本陣」の看板を採り上げます。
こんな看板です。

Yakiniku is like a BBQ.
You grill foods in the middle of the
table.
HONJIN uses mainly Japanese beef, so you
can enjoy delicious taste.
Also we have chicken, pork and seasonal
vegetables.
Depends on how you cook, foods will be more

実に日本的な記述ですね。日本人が作ったと一目でわかる文体です。
確かにそのままでも何とか理解できるのですが、
ネイティブ目線でこんな風に訂正して見ました。

to you all out there and I sincerely hope
that
this email finds you well.
Bed and work,
that’s pretty much what life is for most
of
us that have got to go forth to win that often elusive
metaphor
for money, bread. If we think about
ladies of
the
night in the same context then of course such an
expression
is very apt, as bed and work are one in the
same
for such individuals. For anyone
out there reading
this
that happens to be working flat out inside such an
occupation,
I apologise if I have offended you in any way
by
using such a turn of phrase. I can
assure you it
certainly
was not my intention to mock what some believe
to
be a very valuable service you bestow upon society.
I personally am not, thankfully, in a
position where
I
need such services and if push came to shove, pardon the
pun,
I would not partake in such activities, I would sooner
settle
for another means by which to relieve myself, of
course,
with all due respect.
Which brings
me onto the modern day way to meet and
court
a member of the opposite sex with a view to
beginning
a physical relationship. When going
through
the
whole process of romancing someone these days the
approach
seems to be very virtual and digital which in
many
respects increases the rate of things working out.
It seems people are more able to make
arrangements to
meet
up these days and be very successful at doing it, is it
fair
to say more successful than before the age of
digitalization? I’m not saying that that’s an altogether
bad
thing,
but by doing things digitally it makes people lazy,
some
good examples being; spell checks on computers; email
which
for many equals a licence to use all lower case letters,
miss
out punctuation, use abbreviated words and sometimes
use
numbers instead of words to communicate. Internet
access
has been available on hand held devices for a while
now,
okay, mobile phones, not hand held devices, how I hate
those
two words when they go together, by themselves I
frequently
use them, I like to use them, they are useful words
to
use, but together, well …………..
I
liken all this digitalization and virtual reality to creating
genetically
engineered food and the consequences of growing
it
on the environment in terms of disturbing the ecological
balance
ans spoiling nature. Digitalisation
is changing
the
language we speak and write, it’s changing meanings
of
words we know and have used in the past, it’s adding in
new
words to replace or update words we already know and
use
in certain acceptable and comfortable contexts.
Words
are generally what we need to use to express
ourselves,
they allow us to live and function, they’re our
staple,
so to speak, so do we need to lose them or change
or
lose the original meanings of them?
If
I may digress for a moment.
I like
tomatoes, but these days trying to find a tasty one
is
next to impossible unless you grow your own. True, you
can
buy organic tomatoes, but in most cases organic still
means
that just about all the organic tomatoes you buy
are
grown in a hot house, which means they are basically
tasteless
and not worth the money you pay for them.
Tomatoes
have to be grown in hot houses otherwise you
would
not be able to buy them from the shops, chop
them
up and put them into bowls to spoil salads.
Tasty
tomatoes, in my opinion, at affordable prices, are a
thing
of the past. I am not quite sure
where my
comparisons
are going to come in yet, but bear with me.
GPS systems
are now in vogue and only an arm’s length
away
and so be it, but are they playing with a person’s
destiny
and are they tempting the disappearance of the
true
meaning of the word fate. Whatever
happened
to
fate? Does it still play an
important role inside peoples’
lives
like I believe it used to do? Sometimes dictating how
people
live their lives. Do people still
use the expressions;
“Fate
has brought us together”; “It must have been fate?;
“It
was meant to happen, it was fate”; "Fate lead me to you", etc –
I
think they still do. These days
fate is more digital and if
you
have a GPS system on your mobile phone “Fate lead me
to
you” would play second fiddle to “My GPS system lead me
to
you”. You might say fate literally lies in your hand when
you’re
holding a hand communication device, oops! there I go
again
not using those two words again.
To
be honest, I’m no expert on the matter, and I have no
data
to back up any of this waffle, but as I was going home
last
night I saw a couple, a male and female, meeting up
with
each other and it just got me thinking about digital
romance
and how much less space there is to actually tempt
or
play with fate these days. Does
fate still exist in the
same
context as it has always existed –
throwing caution
to
the wind and leaving things to chance – I would not want
a
mobile phone or a computer playing with my destiny.
To be fair I suppose you
could look at it from the other side,
a
mobile phone playing its part in helping you find the person
that
you will spend the rest of your life with.
“What am I
trying
to say?” “ What is my point?” “Do I really need a point?”
This is just a personal observation and
seeing those two
people
last night just made me stop and think that’s all.
Imagine
if you were not supposed to meet someone before
a
certain time, but you did and it changed the whole course
of
your life, your destiny, you would not know this had
happened
of course until something else happened in your
life
to trigger something off in your brain – this is getting
a
bit technical, so I had better wrap it up before I lose
myself
completely.
Something
similar happened to my wife, she went to visit
her
boyfriend of 7 years in Germany and they had arranged
to
meet in a certain place at a certain time, but the place
was
very crowded, so they couldn’t meet.
They tried again,
but
the same happened. They did not
have hand held
communication
devices, so this limited their chances to
meet,
all they could do was contact each other at the hotels
they
were staying at. The tried several times and in the
end
did not meet, enter me and the rest is history as they say.
Looking at the couple last night meeting
up and seeing the
joy
in their faces and then the real joy coming out when
they
started to look at each others hand communication tools,
comparing
their GPS systems and then comparing the other
features
on their tools, yes, I was that close and it frightened me.
Would this couple have met if it hadn’t
of been for their
GPS
systems? It frightened me because
if my wife had had
a
mobile phone and a GPS system she would have ended up
meeting
and marrying her long term boyfriend and there
would
have been no me on the scene.
Sometime after I met
my
wife she learned that the same long term boyfriend had
been
up to all sorts of rum stuff in Germany, which if she’d have
met
him at time she went to meet him she’d never have known
about
and would have ended up getting married to him.
She told me that that
not meeting up with him was fate
and
that’s what brought us together – maybe I don’t really
have
a point to my story and having a hand held communicating
toy
that is broken and a GPS system that is not working is
just
the modern day equivalent of not having a digital device,
my
wife's situation in Germany, so maybe fate still is the same
and
it still has the same meaning and it’s still used in the
same
way it’s always been used. It's just been brought into
the
digital age and updated or digitalised or maybe it isn’t
the
same and maybe destiny has yet to meet its modern day
digital
fate -who really knows or worse still who really cares????

ご承知の通り、市販の英会話の本の中には、
ネイティブスピーカーの目から見て、不適切な表現が少なくありません。
しかし、そうは言っても、日本人である私達がそれを見抜くのは容易ではないため、
本の中の例文を機械的に必死に覚えようとしてしまいます。
そもそも、実際に外国人と英会話をするためには、
英会話の本を読むだけ(暗記するだけ)では不十分であり、
実際に、会話（使用・応用）して、初めてモノにできると言えるでしょう。
またさらに言うと、単に使うだけもまだ不十分で、
間違ったり、忘れたり思い出したりが繰り返されて、初めて自分のモノになるのではないでしょうか？
人はすぐに覚えたモノほど、直ぐに忘れるものですし、考えた数だけ記憶は増えますし、
苦労して覚えたものほど忘れにくいモノであることは、
これまでの皆様の学習経験からご承知の通りです。
このコーナーでは、問題文とその対訳を安易に併記する方法を廃しまして、
とりあえずご自身の今の英語力を駆使して悩みながら答えを紡ぎ出して頂くという手法を
採らせて頂きました。
故に各質問には、特定の模範回答を用意しておりませんし、
模範解答の紹介をもって暗記を促すつもりもありません。
解答パターンは、読者様の数だけ存在しますし、様々な言い方が可能なので、
どうか気軽にご回答をお送り下さい。

学習塾の栄光が理科の実験教室「サイエンスラボ」を手掛けています。
個人的には、無資源技術立国である日本にとって、
理系教育が重要なことに疑問の余地はありませんので、
理科の実験に高いモチベーションを持つ生徒だけを集めて、
学習塾がレベルの高い科学的な実験の機会を子供たちへ提供することに
大変な意義があるように思います。
もっとも、学習塾に通える所得層の生徒しか享受できないという現実もありますが、
それをもって、当該授業の存在意義を否定することは乱暴な議論でしょう。
そんな、「サイエンスラボ」が今年の４月からイングリッシュコースを開設しました。
内容は、外国人科学者が英語で日本人小学生に理科の実験を指導するというもので、
まるで、文明開化の明治期における青雲の志をもった日本青年が、
お雇い外国人技術者の指導を受けて日本の発展に寄与した歴史を彷彿させるものがあります。
以前、日本人とりわけアジア人は、
西洋欧米人に対して従順になりがちな性質を持っているという
仮説を主張した本を読んだことがあります。
例えば、アヘン戦争で中国人は政治的・経済的・精神的・領土的に
あれだけの被害を受けたにも関わらず、
イギリスに対しては正式に賠償や謝罪を求めることはなく、驚くほど寛容です。
しかし、アジアの周辺諸国に対して、
全く寛容ではないことはご存じのとおりです。
その意味で、アジアのなかの日本の小学生が、西洋の大人から直接、
英語で１２０分の科学実験の指導を受けることは、
日本人の大人の指導よりも効果的と言えるでしょう。
通常の科目のように、
ただ机に座って一方的に講義を受ける受動的授業とは違い、
実験では、指導員との共同作業という能動的要素があることから、
たとえ小学生が英語で指示を受けたとしても、
指導員の行動が伴えば、お互いの意思の疎通はそう難しくはありません。
行動が意思の疎通を容易にしてくれる最たる例がスポーツの世界でしょう。
そんな心配よりもむしろ、
英語で共同作業ができたという体験が、
小学生である彼らの今後の人生に影響を及ぼすことになるでしょう。
科学技術の世界では、言うまでも無く英語が標準語であります。
科学技術の習得が先か、英語の勉強が先か、という不毛の議論をするよりは、
異論反論もありましょうが、こういうイマージョン的なやり方が、
将来に向けた世界レベルの日本人科学者の育成には合っているかもしれません。
サイエンスラボ イングリッシュコースの対象は小学２〜６年生で、
１クラス８名までの少人数制、
授業の最後に英語で実験結果のミニプレゼンテーションを行わせることも、
将来の科学者としての予行演習になるのではないでしょうか。

少子高齢化、国内市場の縮小、グローバル化、
前途多難な日本の将来を見据えると、
大学生になっても夢が定まらないよりも具体的な将来の夢の早期決定、
就職・転職に苦労する人生よりも引く手あまたの就職・転職先、
ジェネラリストよりもスペシャリスト、
行動範囲が国内限定よりもグローバルな活動範囲、
組織内で通用する自分自身の価値よりも対外的に通用する自分自身の価値・・・、
こういう価値観を重視する保護者が、
単に理科と英語の両科目の成績を上げさせようとする目的ではなく、
むしろ、理系分野に興味を持つ我が子に将来の意識づけとしての目的で、
この授業に参加させれば、
月謝７３５０円以上の価値があるかもしれないと思うのですが、
