〓 ２．新英語授業システム「リンクインシステム」の無料体験セミナーのご案内(その２)〓

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

　　本日１月２９日(金)におきまして、弊社開発の新英語教育システム「リンクインシステ

ム」の体験セミナーを開催いたしました。弊社開発の新英語教育システムの「リンクイン

システム」とは、従来バラバラに行われていた日本人英語教師の英語授業と外国人英語教

師の英語授業を「効果的・最大限に」組み合わせることで、従来の学校の枠組みを阻害す

ることなく、真の言語習得に必要となる４技能(読む・聞く・話す・書く)学習を実現させ

た新英語教育システムです。今回、ご参加していただきました方々のうち、神奈川県の某

校英語科の先生からご感想を頂戴しましたので紹介いたします。

　　「今回のセミナーで、リンクインシステムの内容について良く理解ができました。将来

　的には、当校で当該システムの導入することに賛成です。でも、現時点では時期尚早かも

しれません。というのも、学校側として導入するまでの体制作りに時間を要するからです。

しかし、長い間、私は英作文の従来の指導方法に関して、何らかの改善をしたいと考えて

おりましたので、リンクインシステム(４技能統合型授業)は、その改善方法の一つになる

かもしれません。平成２５年度から始まる新学習指導要領『英語の授業は英語で行う』に

関しても、このシステムは日本人英語教師にとって有益なものになりそうです。」

　確かに、当該システムの導入には、学校様としてのご検証とご判断が必要となるはずです。

しかし、何よりもまずは、現場の英語科の先生からのご理解が重要だと弊社は考えており

ます。従いまして、今回のようなご賛同の旨のアンケート回答は、弊社にとっての何より

有難い支援とも言えるものです。他の参加者様からも好意的なご感想を頂戴しております

ので、この場を借りまして、御礼申し上げます。

さて、次回以降のセミナー開催は、２月１５日(月)、１９日(金)、３月８日(月)、１２

日(金)です。関東近郊の学校様へはA4サイズのご案内状を既にお送りしましたが、ご覧い

　 〓　３．日本の中の不思議な英語表現(その１)　〓

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

私たち日本人が外国に訪れてみると、街の中で不思議な日本語に出会うことがあります。

同じように、ここ日本でも外国人が不思議な英語表現を見ることもあるでしょう。そんな

事例をここでご紹介いたします。

“A book makes you grow up. A  book answers your doubt. A heart becomes very

expressive by reading book. We walk together with your life.“

“Even an adult has from a child many book which many persons can enjoy in this

bookstore. By  all means , in order to grow up you yourself,　please read many

books.”

これら２文は、日本の誇る超大型ショッピングモール「I」浦和御園店における主力テナ

ントのA屋書店が、訪れる客に対する企業としての理念を記した英文メッセージです。有

名書店ということもあって、店内には英語で記された本の各コーナー、わざわざレジにも

英語表記がなされ、実にインターナショナルな雰囲気を醸し出しておりまして、特に上記

メッセージは企業としての想い入れが強いのか、最も目立つ数か所に掲示されております

しかしながら、外国人にとってイミガワカラナイ英文になっております。この書店の勤め

る社員は誰一人、この英文の出来について違和感をもたなかったのでしょうか？設置に際

して、社員はチェックしなかったのでしょうか？あるいはチェックできる社員すらいなか

ったのでしょうか？実に不幸なハナシです。もしも、外国人要人が日本の誇る超巨大ショ

ッピングセンターI浦和御園店を見学させた際に、日本の恥部も同時に視察させてしまっ

ているようで、日本国民に一人として残念でなりません。もしも、この不可解な英文が店

が目指す本来の意図を想像しつつ訂正をするならば、こんなカンジになるかもしれません。

“A book helps personal growth  and development. A book has answers to many

questions. Books are for life.”

“Our store has many books for all ages to enjoy. ”

海外で使われる奇妙な日本語を笑う前に、外国人に笑われないような英語教育が大切

なのかもしれません。

　〓　４．スティーブン自叙伝(第１１話その２)　〓

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

■連載形式で好評掲載中の弊社・スティーブン・オーストウィックの自叙伝のコーナーです。

今回は先週後の続きです。

“My conker story” continued …..

It was autumn time and this would be the first time for me to go searching for horse

chestnuts with my friends so we could all play conkers together.  I had been conkering

with my father when I was about 5, so I knew what I was looking for in terms of

collecting the best type of conkers.  I had already been shown by my father how to

safely put a hole in a conker, thread string through it and then play conkers, so I was

looking forward to using this knowledge and experience to help my friends out when

it came to conker playing time.

It was in the month of October, the year was 1972 and this is when I first went out

collecting horse chestnuts, or conkers as they were more commonly refered to, with my

mates.  It was about 7:30 in the morning, it was a Saturday and from memory it was

cold and a bit damp because of the early morning dew, but the sky was clear, the birds

were making a noise and all was set to be a good day – I would learn in time that this

was a perfect day to go out and collect conkers.  By this time I had moved from 65,

Westbourne Grove, Goole to 11, Cobbler Hill, Goole.  I was now living in a brand new

bungalow nearer to the countryside, so this meant that I was very well positioned for

collecting conkers because there were an abundance of horse chestnut trees all around

me.  In fact, there was a small wood called “Hong Kong Wood” that was full of big

old horse chestnut trees.  Hong Kong wood was situated in a little village called

Airmyn, I spent a lot of time in Airmyn as a kid, I loved the place, my first girlfriend

lived in Airmyn, anyway the annual trip to the wood to collect conkers was always

something to get excited about.  The only problem was that every other kid knew

about it, so getting one’s timing right was crucial, otherwise one would end up with

no conkers at all.

On this particular day we, my 4 mates and I, met up at the corner of Cobbler Hill

and then from there proceeded to walk to Airmyn.  Walking to the village of Airmyn

from Goole was always a great experience, it still is actually, because to get there one

had to walk down a long country path called the Bridal Path.  Many years ago this

path was a very popular place for young courting couples to stroll down as they talked

about marriage and planned their future lives together, I am sure that is how the

name “Bridal Path” came about.  On both sides of the Bridal Path there are

farmer’s fields with all sorts of wild life running and flying around in them; hares,

rabbits, mice, hedgehogs, grouse, partridges, foxes, badgers the list goes on.  As we

started walking down the Bridal Path we saw some boys, older than us, coming

towards us on bikes and they were carrying big bags.  As the boys got closer we

could see that the bags were full of conkers, some still tightly packed in their shells,

some out of their shells and some with their shells open so you could see the big

brown horse chestnuts bursting to get out – seeing a big ripe horse chestnut in its

brownie green curled back shell was what it was all about for me – it really was a

sight to see. “Did you get them from Hong Kong Wood”? my mates and I asked,

“Yes”., came the reply, “and if you lot are going there you’d better hurry up

otherwise there won’t be any left for you”.  “Are there a lot of other kids there”,?

 we inquired.  “Yeah, loads and everybody’s got bags full of conkers”. 

“Are there many on the ground?”, we asked, not really, was the reply,

“You’ve got to knock em off the trees with sticks”.  We thanked them for the

information and off they went on their way.  At this point we started to run down

the Bridal Path because we were worried that there would be no conkers left if we

continued to walk.  As we ran, all we could talk about were the conkers we had

seen in the boys’ bags and imagine finding similar ones for ourselves. 

We arrived at the wood and low and behold there were what seemed to be a

thousand boys of all shapes, sizes and ages all trying to get their bags full of conkers.

On seeing all these boys throwing sticks up into the trees and forridging on the

floor for conkers made us all feel a bit downhearted, but we put our best foot

forward and we started our search for what we were there for.  After searching

inside and outside the wood, as well as throwing, or should I say trying to throw,

sticks up into the trees we were not looking so good, the conkers we had found

were for the most part small, these were the ones that had most probably been

thrown away by boys on previous conker collecting campaigns earlier in the week. 

The problem was that we were too small and not strong enough to throw our

sticks up to the top of the trees to knock the big conkers off.  I can remember

seeing some boys will ladders, long poles, scaffolding pipes, pieces of lead pipe,

all utilizing these items in unique ways to get at the big conkers at the top of the

trees – we were all very envious.  We had to have our wits about us as we walked

near these boys because it was easy enough to be hit by a pole or a stick or a piece

of lead pipe – ending up in hospital through collecting conkers was not a position

any of us wanted to be in.

We had been trying for about an hour or so when one of our Airmyn mates came

up to us and suggested another place, a sort of secret place where we might be able

to collect some big conkers, the problem with this place was that it was a field and

in the field were some cows.  It was not that I was scared of cows, nor were my

mates, that was not the point, it was all the cow dung that we had to make sure

we would not stand in that worried us – if you have ever stood in a cow pat then

you will understand the concern. “They’re all dry ones”, said the mate,

“Don’t worry, follow me.  We went out of the wood and walked into Airmyn

high street.  “The conker trees are in Timsy’s field near the river bank”.

 (Timsy was a rich local farmer).  We got to the field and from the roadside we

could see the trees laden with conkers, at first we could not believe it, we

wondered why the conkers were still on the trees, we wondered why there were

no other boys there, all we could see were cows.

We climbed over the fence and into the field and headed towards the prizes

that awaited us.  There were quite a lot of cows in the field, but for the most

part they were going about their business chewing their cud and looking at us

with their big brown eyes, the pats were definitely there, some were dry, but most

were recent or fresh deposits.  We were all so very much focused on getting the

big conkers off the trees that it was inevitable that someone would come a

cropper and stand in a cow pat.  That person was actually me, not fully, but

partially and the feeling and smell were indescribable. I ended up cleaning

myself as best as I could with some tissues I had and some leaves that I found,

but I knew I would be in for it from my mum when I get home.  We got to the

first tree and on the floor were plenty of conkers for us to collect, the problem was

trying to fish them out of the cow pats – this was definitely the reason why these

trees were still untouched.   The best idea seemed to be to climb the trees and

then knock conkers off into an area that was not so strewn with cow

pats – searching for such areas looked like it was going to be a task in itself, but

we managed to collect a fair few big conkers between us and we then set off back

towards the fence.  It should have been a fairly straight forward return to the

fence, but it did not quite turn out that way - to be continued next week.

■最近、英語教育が妙な方向に進んでいるような気がしてならない。我々英語教師(自分は

元英語教師です)は、大学に在学中に「小学校の教員免許」がほとんど取得できない状況に

ありました。したがって、現在、小学校で教えている教員の中には英語の教員免許状を持

っている人は、極めて稀であるはずです。その人たちに初歩の初歩、最も大事な生徒にと

って大事な初期の時期に英語を教えさせることの無謀さを、「小学校から英語教育を教え

るべき」と考えている役人は気付いていないのだろうか？英語学習において、中学1年生

は、一番神経を使う指導の時期。それなのに、いい加減な指導でお茶を濁し、英語を教え

ましたとされては、現在の中学校を教えている教員にとって、これ以上迷惑なことはあり

ません。もしも、小学校の英語が全部ネイティブの人が指導するのなら大賛成である。生

の活きた発言・表現に接する事が出来れば、それとはまた別で子供達の外国語への興味、

関心が育ち、中学教師にとっても大歓迎であろう。したがって、小学校から英語を教える

のであるなら、まずは大学での教職カリキュラムを先に改革し、小学校用の英語教員の養

成制度がキチンと確立された後に、初めて小学生へ英語が教えられるべきでしょう。日本

の英語教育を憂いています。

■日本のイマージョン授業といえば、英語を用いて他科目を教育するプログラムというの

認識がされてがちです。言うまでもなく、日本は、日本語という単一の言語で十分にお互

いのコミュニケーションが可能となっています。一方、カナダでは、英語しか分からない

生徒や、フランス語しか分からない生徒、スペイン語しか分からない生徒等が混在してお

ります。そんな事情の中で、カナダは、本来、それぞれの言語でそれぞれの生徒への教育

すべきところを、やむを得ず、どれか１つの目的言語を決めて、その言葉を使って、お互

いのコミュニケーションをも円滑に図れるようにしたバイリンガル教育を生み出しました。

これがイマージョンです。そんな本来のイマージョン教育に至った経緯と目的と、現在の

日本のイマージョン教育が目指している目的、これらに関して何となく違和感を感じるの

は私だけでしょうか？
