先週号でもお知らせいたしました通り、今月１月２５日と２９日、２月は１５日と１９日、
３月は８日と１２日におきまして、弊社開発の新英語教育システム「リンクインシステム」
の体験セミナーを開催いたします。既に弊社から関東近郊のほとんどの学校様へA4サイズ
ハガキをお送りしておりますが、もうご覧いただけましたでしょうか？学校様にとって
ご多忙な時期の開催にも関わらず、多くの学校関係者様からのご参加の旨のご回答
を頂戴しております。この場を借りまして、厚く御礼申し上げます。
弊社開発の新英語教育システムの「リンクインシステム」は、従来バラバラに行われて
いた日本人英語教師の英語授業と外国人英語教師の英語授業を「効果的・最大限に」組み
合わせることで、従来の学校の枠組みを阻害することなく、日本の英語授業に欠落しがち
な４技能(読む・聞く・話す・書く)を統合させた理想の英語授業を実現させるシステムで
す。具体的には、まず日本人教師が先行して教科書を使って、文法・読解を教えた後に、
今度は外国人講師が英語のみを使って、その中身を掘り下げていくというものです。つま
り、日本人教師が最初に「理解の下地」を作っているため、生徒にとってはたとえ全編英
語であっても、内容の理解は容易で、ありがちな不安感・恐怖感もなく外国人講師の英語
授業が効果的に実施できることになります。 今回のセミナーは、リンクインシステムに
よる中学１年生の外国人講師による英語授業が実際に参観できます。皆様の御参加をお待
ちしております。

Collecting
horse chestnuts and playing conkers - Part 1.
As a kid one game that I
really looked forward to playing every year was conkers.
The
whole process of going out to collect horse chestnuts to play conkers brings
back a
lot
of happy and fun childhood memories for me; right from throwing big heavy
wooden
sticks
up into the trees to rattle against the branches to hopefully dislodge the
prickly l
ittle
cases that house the horse chestnuts, right the way through to actually
climbing
high
up into the trees to try to shake them directly from the branches. The
sticks we
used
to throw into the trees were as big as what we were back then, throwing them
up
was a mammoth task and when we were high up in the trees and we looked down
to
the ground we felt we were on top of the world - how I wish I still had some of
the
stuff
that allowed me to climb so high and so fearlessly back then – so much for
knowing
nothing of how we would have to change to accommodate life’s later
responsibilities
….. anyway, just
before I get into my “conker” story I think it
only
fair to give you a bit of an insight into what the game of conkers is all about
and
how it is played.
Conkers
is a game that is played by two people and the basic objective of the game
is to
see who’s conker
or horse chestnut is the strongest, the winner of the game
being
the one that still has a conker attached to a piece of string after all the
tapping
and smashing has taken place. The game is played in Autumn because t
hat
is when horse chestnuts are ready for collecting. To play the game fairly
both
opponents
should really use horse chestnuts from the same season, not ones that
have
been artificially hardened or kept in a draw or cupboard over a period of
months
or years. There are all sorts of tricks or methods that conker players
use
to try to make their horse chestnuts become stronger and more competitive;
soaking
them in vinegar or salt water and then baking them in the oven is a
common
one, leaving them for a year in a dark place to shrivel up and become
hard
is another. Perhaps the most unusual and extreme one is to feed the
conker
to a
pig and then as it is passing through the pig’s stomach the juices in the
pig’s stomach naturally harden the
horse chestnut, or so the theory goes –
having
to later sift through the pig’s
excrement to find the potential prize conker
would
not be a task I would fancy undertaking though. In most parts of the UK
a
coin is tossed into the air, a flower is thrown into the air or another means
is
used
to determine who can have the first smash or three smashes. In some
parts
of the UK the person that wins the toss or wins whatever method was used
to
decide who would go first can have three consecutive smashes, in Yorkshire
where
I come from, we would just toss a coin or do the “Eenie Meenie Miny Mo”
thing
to determine who went first and then the person going first would just
have
one smash. Playing conkers in the playground at school is the most common
scenario
in the UK and from my school days conker tournaments were always fairly
big
and important occasions. If one won one game of conkers one’s conker would
be
termed a “one-er”, if one won two games one’s winning conker would be
termed
a two-er, a three time winner would be termed a three-er and so on.
I
would often walk around, as my friends did, bragging about our conker
tournament
victories,
“I have just
beaten a fiver with my two-er, mine’s a seven-er now”.
of
course losing was a pretty common occurance, so “I have just lost to a laggy”
.
would often be said in great disappointment. Laggies are either very old
conkers
or
specially treated conkers (I think the word “laggy” may come from the
expression
used for a prison convict to express the time he/she has spent behind bars),
anyway,
laggies are the shriveled up, kept for a long time, soaked in salt and
vinegar
and then baked in an oven demon conker, and as already mentioned when
used
in conker tournaments the tournaments themselves were often classed as
unfair – more about that later in my story.
To
prepare to play you first have to choose a conker (a nice big round deep
brown
shiny one) and then bore a hole exactly through the middle of it.
Make
sure the hole you bore is as near to middle as possible and it is a clean
one
without any surrounding cracks or pieces peeled off, otherwise this will weaken
the
conker and it will not last very long in a battle. Be extremely careful
as you bore
your
hole! Most people use a hole making screwdriver or a skewer, but do not
hold
either
in your hand because you could end up boring a hole in it if you are not
careful
(I can
remember using a metal compass when I was at school, but these days they
all
seem to be made of plastic and not strong enough for this job). Thread a
piece
of
string through the hole, you may have to push it through with the screwdriver
or
skewer, I personally think it is best to bore a small hole rather than a big
hole
and
this will certainly mean that you will have to push the string through with
your
screwdriver or skewer, as you will not be able to thread it through by hand
only.
Proceed to tie a knot at one end, so that it doesn't pull through and you
are ready
to play conkers. The length of the string should be such that it is long
enough
to wrap twice around your clenched hand with about 10 inches (25 cm)
left to
spare. That should give you a pretty good insight into the game of
conkers,
I will hopefully get into my story next week, until then, keep well
and have a good week next week.

〓 ４．編集後記(メルマガ編集者らによる雑感コーナー) 〓

■ある朝、JR東日本の駅にあるコインロッカーを使おうと、荷物を入れようとしましたら、
同じようにロッカーを利用しようとしている外国人旅行客の姿が見えました。明らかに異
国のコインロッカーの利用方法に悩んでいるようにみえましたが、各ロッカーの扉にはキ
チンと英文の説明文が貼ってありましたので、あえて私は彼を助けることもせずその場を
後にしました。その日の夕方になって、駅に戻った私はロッカーから荷物を取り出そうと、
扉に手を掛けた時、英文の利用説明書が目に入りました。よく見ると、次のように書いて
ありました。
１ 使い方（How to use）
２ 荷物を入れる時（When depositing your luggage）
３ 荷物を入れて扉を閉める(Put it in and close door)
４ 表示料金の金額を入れる(Deposit money displayed)
５ 扉をおさえてカギを左に回して抜く
(While pressing on door, turn key counter-clockwise and with draw key)
なるほど、英文法的には、多少違和感を覚えるかもしれませんが、それにしても特に
「３の英語説明文」の後半の意味が不明瞭です。どうやら文意から察するに、本来は、
“withdraw key”(キーを抜く)としなければならないところを、“with draw key”
(意味不明ですが敢えて訳すと「ドローキーを用いて」か？)と記載されているようです。
このタイプのコインロッカーは関東一円のＪＲの主要駅に一括導入され、設置後かなりの
年月を経過しているはすです。当然、かなりの数の外国人の利用もあったはすでしょう。
とすれば、設置以来、こんな簡単な誤記が訂正されることなく今日を迎えていることに驚き
を感じました。おそらく日本を代表する交通機関の拙い英語表記が、彼ら脳裡へ鮮明に刻ま
れたことでしょう。そもそも、設置の時点でJRの担当者はこの事に気づくべきでしょう。
にもかかわらす、あのJR東日本の厳重なチェックでさえも気付かなかったとは、日本の
優良企業の英語力が所詮はこの程度でしかなかったということです。おそらくは今後も、
同社の自助努力で訂正がされるとは到底考えにくいので、外部の誰かが指摘をしない限りは、
残念ながらこのまま恥ずかしい状態が維持され続けることになるでしょう。
ご存じのとおり、わが国は海外に向けて日本の観光を必死にアッピールしております。
その具体的な取り組みの一つとして、政府は多額の国費を投じてまで、一昨年に観光庁を
発足させました。JR東日本のように公共性が高く国策に直結するような企業でさえ、この
程度なのですから、日本の目指す観光立国への道程は、まだまだ遠いと言えるでしょう。
これ以上、年間６００万人もの来日外国人観光客の失笑を買わないようにしたいものです。
