〓 ２．某校にて弊社が夏期英語特別講習を担当、生徒の反応は？〓

■今年の８月におきまして、都内近県の某中学校におきまして、弊社にて、中学２年生と中
学３年生の２学年各５０名あまりの夏期英語講習を１週間ほど担当させて頂きました。
幸いにして、学校様からの厚いご信頼の下、カリキュラム内容につきご一任を頂きました
ので、弊社独自に企画した学習内容で、外国人英語講師が複数名派遣し、日本語無しの全編
英語にて、一週間ほど中身の濃い充実した夏期講習を実施することができました。そこで、
講習最終日に生徒全員によるアンケートの結果をご紹介したします。
質問1『この夏期講習で何を学びましたか？』(中２・３年生合計)
通常の英語授業でやらない授業 １６％
将来役に立つような英会話表現 ２３％
英語でのプレゼンテーション １１％
受験対策になる知識(英作文のコツ習得) １３％
英語への親しみ・苦手意識克服 ６％
見慣れない外国人による授業体験 １５％
通常授業の復習ができたこと ８％

質問2『期間中、講師の言っていることが理解出来てましたか？』(中２クラス)

質問１の結果については、実施した学校の予測として、ある度予期していたようなアン
ケート回答がほとんどだったそうです。しかし、唯一の意外だったのが、１０人のうち１
人の割合で「英語でのプレゼンテーション」を学んだと回答されていたことでした。
この結果を見ながら、「生徒のモチベーションの低さを嘆くよりも、要はやり方なん
ですね」と言われていた当該学校の担当の先生の言葉が印象的でした。
そもそも、担当の先生の意図として、今回の講習は、受験予備校的なものではなく、学校
の通常授業で時間を掛けて教えきれなかったものを補うものとするという指針がありまし
て、２学期からはこのアンケートを踏まえて授業に取組んでいきたいとのことでした。

〓３．英語教育の現場と外国人講師について(その２) 〓

最近、弊社でこれまで実施してきたいろいろな資料を読み返しておりましたところ、たま
たま、２年前に弊社が行った実態調査の資料が目に止まりました。先週の本欄にてご紹介し
ました当該アンケートから外国人講師とその職場環境における事例を考えたいと思います。
ティーム・ティーチングであれソロ・ティーチングであれ、また外国人講師が日本での学
校 経験を持っている、またはほとんど経験のない講師でも、共通することかと思われます。
通常「レッスンプラン・カリキュラム作成」に関しては、日本人教師との話し合い等で確認
されていると思われますが、学校または英語科または担当日本人教師の方針が、年度初めには
外国人講師にきっちりと理解（本人が何をどこまでやるのか、やらなくてもいいのか）されて
いるか。
（ここまで書くと、どこに責任の所在があるのかを問うていることをご理解下さい。）
日本人教師が大変忙しく時間を作って打ち合わせをすることが困難であることが多い現状で
すが、よくあるのは、ある程度クラスが落ち着いてくると外国人講師にまかせるケースです。
それはそれでいいのですが、その都度、場当たり的にレッスンプランを作成し、ともかく生
徒が楽しく学んで？（ゲーム形式を用いるのは良いのですが、ゲームが目的になってしまわな
い限り。私個人としては、ゲームは極力避けたい。）それで１年が終わってしまい、その繰り
返しで発展が望めないケース・・・・。
確かに基本的に外国人講師は補助の位置付からは出ていないゆえ（それで十分と言われれば
それまでですが。）にしても、やはり年間３０時間近くを担当し生徒評価もある程度するので
あれば、なにがしかのスキームがあってもいいのではないでしょうか。
上記の場合に考えられることは、学校側＝日本人教師が教科書を持ちそれに沿って授業を進
めるのに対して、外国人講師に関してオーラルクラスゆえに、TTのための外国人講師用に作成
されたものは、数社で教案を作られていますが、あまりないようです。当然かも知れませんが、
欧米人用に作られたテキストはありますが、外国人講師が日本人教師用教科書に沿って教える
には、それなりの工夫がされないと難しいと思われます。
そこで、外国人講師のティーチング・プラン作成が必要となってくるわけです。実際、これ
にはそれなりの時間をかけないと納得するものは簡単にはできません。毎年同じ教科書を使用
する場合も、ある程度応用改良すれば使用可能ですが、時間の変化に沿うようにするには常に
それだけの努力と注意を払わなければなりません。
外国人講師の言い分を聞いていますと、大半のオーラル・コミュニケーション授業は、何か
の教材を使用しているにしても、欧米で育った講師が考える学期・学年単位の系統だったレッ
スンプランやカリキュラムを実施しているとは言い難いものであると。
さて、いかがなものでしょうか皆様のところでは？
ここでの一応まとめを述べさせていただければ、レッスンプラン作成には、中学・高校での
レッスンプラン・シラバスをはっきりと書き出し、学期・学年単位の系統だったものを作りあ
げること。当然多少の調整は常に避けられないとしても、学校・英語科の方針があれば、それ
に沿った、外国人講師用の具体的プランを作成してみることが第一歩となるのではないでしょ
うか？

■シンガポールは東京の人口の１/３以下なのに、アジアにおける存在感があります。同国の
国立大学はたったの３校のみですが、イギリスのタイムズ誌によれば、そのうちの１校が大
学ランキングで１０位台、日本の私学の雄たる早稲田・慶応は１００位〜２００位台だそう
です。おそらく、庶民レベルでも英語が通じる国民的英語能力が、国際的な学術機関の地位
をも押し上げているのでしょう。さらに、英語での情報開示文書作成で苦労する日本を尻目
に、同国の資本市場の利便性は世界から評価されています。こうした背景から、国際会議に
おいて、一党独裁国家でありながら、まるでアジアを代表する国家であるかのような立ち振
る舞いがみられ、テレビの前の我々日本人に少なからず違和感を与えていることは周知のと
おりです。日本の国際的地位を維持するためのも、英語教育関係者様の奮起を願って止みま
せん。
■インフルエンザの影響が気になるところです。私の住まい近辺の小学校も今週初めに、
学校閉鎖から解放されたようですが、再びクラス閉鎖が出ています。
■以下は、本メルマガに連載形式で掲載中の弊社・スティーブンの前半生です。（第６話）
Every year on November the 5th we always celebrate Guy Fawkes night, or as it is
more commonly known where I come from as ‘Bonfire Night’. For your information,
Guy Fawkes was one of 13 catholic extremist that tried to blow up the British
Houses of parliament back in the early part of the 16th century. After his failed
plot he, together with his fellow conspirators were burned at the stake and then
placed in the history books to be forever remembered on November 5th.
Anyway, back to my plot. In my hometown of Goole we would have many bonfires,
each street would try to compete with each other to see who could build the
biggest and the best constructed bonfire. Goole is in a rural area, so there
are plenty of farmer’s fields and lots of waste ground that could be used for
bonfire building. Of course we had to get permission from the farmers and the
local council first before erecting the bonfires, but this was never a problem
because very often the farmers and council officials would attend the bonfires
with their families and and get involved in the festivities along with everybody
else. As I recall, part of the preparation for Bonfire Night was trying to earn
enough money to buy fireworks and food for the big night. The preparation for
this usually started about two weeks before November the 5th came around.
It was interesting how we used to collect money, first we would make an effigy
of Guy Fawkes which basically comprised of old clothes sewn together and stuffed
with straw or newspaper. We would then put the effigy into an old baby’s pram or
onto an old trolley and wheel it around the streets asking people for money –
we would always say the same thing “Could you please spare a penny for the Guy?
In general most people would take a look at my generally dirty and waif and
stray type appearance and respond by giving me money because they knew that it
was going to be used for a community festival. When the two weeks were up we
had usually collected enough money to buy fireworks and food to hold a pretty
reasonable event.
I can always remember getting into a lot trouble with my parents and next door
neighbours when I was about 6 years old. As already mentioned, part of the
build up to Bonfire Night was the actual sourcing and collecting of the wood
and other materials that were used to build the bonfires. The whole point of
building a bonfire was to build it as big and as strong as possible and to do
so one needed to collect a lot of burnable materials. I can remember myself
and my friends being at a loss because we had collected what we thought was all
the wood and other materials from around and about, and unfortunately our bonfire
was still smaller than the bonfire in the next street. I knew that one of my
next door neighbours had some very big old wooden cabinets covered up in their
garden, so I went and knocked on their door to see if I could have them for
our bonfire. I knocked and knocked but nobody answered the door, so I had a
peek under the cover and then took it upon myself to take the cabinets thinking
that the next door neighbours would not mind and they would probably think that
I had done them a favour by taking them. As a 6 year old boy all I wanted to
do was build the biggest bonfire possible and it did not matter how I did it as
long as I achieved the objective. As it turned out the cabinets that I thought
were old and worthless were in actual fact antiques and worth some money, the
next door neighbours were planning to get them restored. All I can remember is
being smacked on my bottom very hard and in a crying state being frog marched by
my mother and father to the bonfire to try to retrieve the cabinets. I can also
remember being lectured at and shouted at along the way and told that I would
have to go to a special home for boys that stole things and took things without
permission, which I clearly remember scared me a lot. We did manage to find the
cabinets and luckily for me they were still in one piece, my mother and father
quickly took them off the fire and I helped to carry them back and they were duly
returned to the neighbours. Afterwards at home, I can remember my mother and
father sitting me down and telling me that they would have to bear the
consequences for my actions, which of course meant that I had greatly embarrassed
them and made it seem that they were not bringing me up properly. At that time
I did not quite understand exactly what I had done, what 6 year old boy would
really, but I knew I had done wrong because I had had my bottom smacked, what
I did not know was what the possible ramifications of my actions could be towards
my parents.
Bonfire Night arrived, but unfortunately because of what I had done I could not
join in the festivities with my friends. I can remember watching the fireworks
from my bedroom window shoot up into the sky and seeing the big orange and red
flames from the fire flicking up into the night sky with all the burnt ashes
blowing around with the wind . All my friends and their parents were enjoying
themselves eating hot dogs and toffee apples and drinking homemade vegetable soup,
I must admit at the time I resented my parents although I knew I had done wrong.
I can clearly remember my mother and father telling me that I would only truly
understand the seriousness of what I had done later in life when I became a
parent. Ironically, this did happen and only very recently, but that’s another
story.
I am happy to report that November 5th 1969 was the first and last Bonfire Night
I ever missed, of course I got into all sorts of other trouble along the way,
but as kids, didn’t we all ?
